The Sherm Pensyl Story...Nationals '92

The year is 1992.  My name is Sherm Pensyl, and I am 18.  I find myself in New York City, NY.  There are no cell phones, internet.  This is my first time in the Big Apple.  My dad thinks I’m on a wild goose chase–a setup for disappointment.  I’ve come all this way because of the advice of a man I barely know, Neil Berkeley.  Neil recruited me onto a bench press team.

Neil is from Meyersdale, PA.  A town about an hour away from my home.  He has heard of me, because I was winning bench press events.  I had just won several events in a row when I got the call.  Neil said I should go to NYC with his team to a National Meet.  He said I’ll win and set a national record.  I had no idea what the national record was.  We couldn’t just get online and see.  I was a local champ and a state champ….but a national champ.  Neil was the team sponsor, so why not.  I get to go to New York and do what I love.

This is my first National event.  There are lifters from all over the Northeastern US.  The gym is massive with Bench after Bench.  There are officials,  competitors, teams, sponsors and coaches everywhere.  It is very intimidating.  I’m from a little gym in Bedford, PA.  The Iron Den is in the basement of the Rosentrator’s house.  I started training with Monte and Debbie Rosentrator when I was 13.  The Iron Den was a small gym of powerlifters and I was a little weakling at the time, but they treated me like their prize pupil.  And eventually, it all started to click on the bench press.

Backstory

When you are from a small rural town in the 80’s and 90’s, all the popular athletes play football, basketball or wrestle.  I just didn’t enjoy those sports.  I was small and skinny…a bit of a late bloomer.  But, I had a competitive side.  And, I loved to compete.  Especially, I loved to win.  I had 5 siblings, so everything is a competition growing up.  Then, I found the Iron Den.  Monte and Debbie were competitive power lifters.  They were champions at local and state levels at Deadlift, Squat and Bench Press.  I learned all 3, but really enjoyed and excelled at the bench press.

Lift 1

So, I approach the main bench and announce my first lift….315.  I am 18 years old.  I weigh 163.5.  The current national record is 310.  I have to talk to myself.  There is a lot of pressure.  “Sherm Pensyl, I deserve to be here.”  I’ve trained for this.  I’m ready for this.  I can do this.  It doesn’t matter if I’m in NYC or The Iron Den, 315lbs is 315lbs.  My home bench is the same size as this bench.  Monte has trained me.  Monte has coached me.  I have to do it for him.  I have to do it for Neil.  He believed in me and recruited me.  I have to do it for my family.  This is my big moment……breathe.

Then comes the announcement.  “Sherm Pensyl”.  I’m up.  The bench press bar is loaded.  I have 1 minute.  I start my pre-lift routine. First, get the belt on tight.  I’m in the zone now.  Chalk on the hands.  Smelling Salts.  My team is cheering.  People are yelling.  Everyone is excited as I get under the bar.  There is a spotter behind me and on each end.  The gym is silent.

My eyes are open, but I can’t see anything.  I’m too focused on one spot on the ceiling.  Get the basics right!  Butt tight on bench.  Shoulder blades pressed down.  Head down.  Arched back.  Heels down.  Hands even on the bar.  “1, 2, 3″ and I start the lift.  The bench press commands begin…..”Start!”  I bring the bar to a rest on my chest.  “Press!” The next command.  With a smooth press I lock out my arms.  “Rack!” I get the command to finish.  I did it!  Sherm Pensyl, National champ!  I was in total disbelief and shock.  The gym erupted.

Lifts 2,3

That record didn’t last long.  I had 2 more lifts.  I broke the record 2 more times.  345lbs was my 3rd and final successful lift.  I was still in shock!  I didn’t know what to expect.  What an accomplishment for a young lifter at a drug-free gym in Bedford, PA.  Now I’m the best bencher in the country in the teenage (17-19), 165lb weight class.  I wanted to celebrate with my parents.  They didn’t even know yet.  I had to find a pay phone, so I could call them.

I remember this call vividly.  My dad answered.  He couldn’t believe it.  He started jumping up and down.  It definitely sounded like he dropped the phone to tell Mom.  It was a really cool moment.  At that point in my life, I came to realize that this may become more than just an after-school hobby.

I arrived home in the wee hours of the morning.  It was a 5 hour drive.  Everyone was exhausted, but my parents were still up waiting.  They had made a banner and hung balloons to celebrate.  They wanted to hear all about it.  I’ll never forget how proud my dad was.  It felt awesome for me to make them proud.  My parents, especially my dad, started going to all my meets.

Sherm Pensyl--Lela Pensyl's Dad

Lela Pensyl is like every other kid, except she grew up watching me, Sherm Pensyl, lift.  She was with me in the gym and at bench press competitions.  She really loved being by my side.  From a young age she knew she wanted to lift, too.  Of course like any father, I loved the idea of her joining me at my favorite place….the gym.

But, I had a rule.  No lifting until you’re 13.  At the Haus of Fury, that is a gym rule, Sherm Pensyl’s Rule.  Lela was allowed to learn correct form for the lifts before age 13.  But, no weight.  So, Lela tinkered around with bench press over the years.  We had fun with it.  Nothing serious.

Becoming a World Champ

Lela turned 13.  I thought it was ‘Go’ time.  But, Lela wasn’t feeling it.  She wanted to spend her time with friends and do teenage stuff.  I was a little disappointed, but I understood.  We were all 13 once.  I remember my friends didn’t want to join me at the gym back then as well.  However; 5 months later, she came to me with a question.  “Is the offer to train me to lift weights still on the table?”  She was feeling out of shape and wanted to make a change.  She knew we could do something about it, together.  We immediately made a B-line to “The Haus” and got to work!

Lela began her journey at 135lbs with a 75lb bench.  But, she inherited a love for the grind in the weight room.  She was willing to push herself hard.  Make no mistake, I am a hard trainer.  I was even harder on her.  My expectations are high.  I am very demanding.  Bench press is not a hobby at The Haus….It’s a passion.  Lela and I butted heads often, LOL, but on the other side of pain she found success.  By 2022, she was a 115lbs athlete that could bench press 120lbs.

So, it was time.  We were competing together for the 2nd time.  The first time Lela set a new State and National record in the bench press.  I watched that lift with tears in my eyes.  I understood how my dad felt nearly 30 years ago when I broke a national record.  But, we had bigger fish to fry!  Lela had continued her training.  We had our sites on a world record bench press!

A World Champ

It was Saturday.  Lela’s day to lift.  I told her that I was proud of her no matter what and she was leaving a national champ either way, but we were ready for this.  She put in the work.  She hit the gym 2-3 times/week.  She ate right.  Slept right.  It was time to show the world!  And, in the 114lb weight class, 14-15 year old, female, 100% RAW single lift bench press class…Lela Pensyl set the bench press world record at 121.3lbs!!!!  She brought the record back to the USA from Canada.  Click here for the list of RAW World Records

On Sunday, I lifted.  I was introduced as Sherm Pensyl, father of Lela Pensyl.  Never before had I stood in such a great shadow.  It was pretty awesome having my name mentioned as second fiddle to my kid.  In a predominately male sport, having your daughter follow your passion and succeed at it is possibly the greatest feeling in the world.

Sherm Pensy's Gym...The Haus of Fury

Sherm Pensyl 430X2 Bench Press
100% RAW at The Haus

The Haus of Fury is my home gym.  It is where Lela and I train 99% of the time.  I am blessed that it is also located 100ft from my house.  It is in my back yard.   Inside The Haus, the center piece is the bench.  I had it built to replicate those on the competition platform.   We can safely bench press over 500lbs.  The Haus is also equipped with a lat pulldown machine, Preacher curl bench, dips bar, squat rack, cable flies/triceps machine, dumbbell rack, 2 more benches (1 that will incline) for ancillary work and an abs machine.  Admittedly, most of us just have an ab, so we need the machine.

The Haus of Fury is designed for the optimal powerlifting results. Space is tight when we have a full Haus and several lifts being trained at a time.  But, this allows for an incredible energy.  We always lift one person at a time and cheer on that person.  I try to have the best lifting environment that I can.  The Haus was built complete with heat and air conditioning, so we can be comfortable.  I have a huge sound system throughout so the lifter that is up can pick a motivational song to help with the movement.  On a daily basis there are bench presses over 400lbs, squats over 400lbs and deadlifts over 500lbs taking place.  I designed The Haus itself for this kind of intensity.

I do not believe you should lift weights everyday.  We lift weights 3 nights a week.  Each lift is usually 2 hours long.  I bench press twice per week.  Days 1 and 3 are for bench, chest and back.  Day 2 is for legs and ancillary work.  There are guys at the Haus that compete in more than just bench press.  They bench Day 1, squat and ancillary work Day 2 and deadlift and bench Day 3.  It is a major commitment.  We all have jobs.  Most of us have families.  We all prioritize our time at the Haus, and we work together to make it work.  Sometimes it even looks like a daycare.

Pictured: Sherm Pensyl, Lela Pensyl and some Friends at the Haus of Fury

Bottomline is….We have to make the time.  We have fun.   But it is a matter of discipline.  Motivation leaves.  Stuff comes up.  Life gets busy.  There are times you are extremally tired.  You have to “Pay the Rent.”  You must put in the work.  It’s definitely a huge help that I can walk to The Haus.  When I can’t lift at 6pm on a lifting night, I lift earlier or a different day.  I find a way to make it work with my lifting crew.  When life gets too busy I always think about Monte Rosentrater telling me “Sherm Pensyl, a little bit is better than none.”  That motivates me to make it to the gym and prioritize what I do.  I’ll hit some of the more important exercises if it’s going to be a short workout.

The future of the gym is exciting!  I want to continue to train Lela and watch her get stronger and succeed.  Hopefully, I’ll take some more records.  It’s great for the gym when we break records.  We all need the motivation.  I will turn 50 in January, 2024.  I plan to take the PA state bench press record in the 100% RAW federation for my age and weight–50-54 age, 242 weight class.  It will be really cool for The Haus, because Monte Rosentrater is coming out of retirement to compete with Lela and I.  Monte is in his early 70’s and can break the state records for squat, bench press and deadlift in his weight class in the 100% RAW federation.  It will be quite a moment to compete alongside Monte and Lela.

I also really hope the guys I’m training now will continue to train and compete.  I’m not hanging this up anytime soon.  I hope to keep competing alongside my daughter for a long time.

Sherm Pensyl--Family and Friends

Family

Family and Friends has been a major part of my life over the years….Happy and Sad.  There are always ups and downs in life.  My mental therapy has always been to push myself in the weight room.  Both of my parents and 3 siblings are deceased.  I still have 2 sisters in Virginia and South Carolina.  I am also divorced.  My daughter, Lela, is the only family I have close by.  In the past I had my Dad at all my meets.  My Mom and 1 sister came to the big meets.  Today, it’s just Lela and me.  She has been competing and training alongside me since 2021.  That means so much to me.  I couldn’t ask for more support than that.  Lela and I support each other.  Team Pensyl!

Lela Pensyl

Lela has become my best friend.  I would give my life for her.  As a divorced dad, I don’t get to see her everyday.  When she is with me, we plan workout time.  It is my absolute happy place!  I’d be lying if I didn’t say that we butt heads in the gym.  She can be challenging for me at times.  I’m a tough coach.  I put high expectations on her.  But, she is a teenager.  She still wants to be a kid sometimes.  I have to let her know when it is time to move some weight.

Lela and I have gotten much closer over the last couple years.  The reason is without a doubt lifting and competing together.  A parent spends the first five years of your kid’s life teaching them everything you can  to prepare them for school.  Then, you hand them over to the school system and let the professionals teach them. With lifting, I get to continue to teach my kid something that I know and love.  I consider that one of the greatest things that I’ve ever done in the gym or life.

Friendships

I’ve made a lot of friends as a result of lifting over the years.  Some are friends that I only compete against.  Others are my friends that train at my gym with me.  Those that are more local are some of my best friends.  We do things together even outside the gym.  We help each other out.  Our love for lifting is a huge common interest.  People cut from the same cloth make some of the best and most loyal friends.

Lela, my friends and I work hard.  No question about that.  But, sometimes we get to celebrate.  We go for ice cream when someone has a great achievement or reaches a major milestone.  Ice cream is how we reward ourselves after a season of training hard and dieting hard for a competition.  I also brag on Facebook about Lela and my Haus of Fury Teammates.  On a daily basis, we bump fists with everyone at the gym after a successful lift.  Celebrating on all levels with each other is a culture that started many years ago.  I had a garage gym and an old/current friend, Dave Price, started with the fist bumping.  We all continue to do that to support each other.

It is important to me that we acknowledge the work of others and demonstrate respect.  I look forward to all the forms of celebration.  When I’m going for a big lift at The Haus or a competition, I look forward to getting that first fist bump after ward.

Sherm Pensyl--Q&A with A Champion Dad

Jeremy:  Can you describe a particularly challenging competition that you and Lela faced together?

Sherm Pensyl:  We were at a competition in 2022 and Lela got “red lighted” for lifter her butt on her opening bench press attempt.  She did not lock out her second attempt, because she was discouraged from missing her first attempt.  You only get three attempts, so I really had to give her a pep talk so she didn’t get scratched from the meet.  As she got on the platform and sat on the bench, I told her to “remember her last name.”  It was like flipping a switch.  She got her third attempt and actually won outstanding female bench presser at the meet.  Neither of us saw that coming.  I also won outstanding male bench presser at that meet.  It was really cool for us both to walk away with that honor.

.

Jeremy:  What are the biggest challenges you have faced over the years?

Sherm Pensyl:  Injuries, Injuries, Injuries.  Both shoulders, both elbows, both wrists, neck, back and ribs.  At times, I have to stop lifting for some time and rest.  Generally, I have to change up my routine and “lift around my injury.”  There is more than one way to skin a cat, and there is more than one way to train every muscle.  I find other exercises that do not irritate the injury or accelerate it.  For example if I’m having shoulder pain from bench press, the incline bench press, decline bench press, close grip bench press or dumbbell bench press may be a substitute.   Thanks to practice, I’ve gotten very good at training around my injuries.  That’s how I’ve stayed in the game since 1990.

 .

Jeremy:  How do you prioritize your mental and physical well-being during intense training?

Sherm Pensyl:  I have always said that competitive lifting is 75% mental.  If you don’t have a good mental game, it’s tough to make gains in the gym.  Heavy weight is heavy.  You have to go into a big lift not knowing if you have the physical goods to move the weight.  A good, clear mind is super important.  If you don’t have the mental game, it’s tough to make that up with physical attributes.  I’ve always said to my fellow lifters when they are stressed or have tough times in life…”take it out on the weights”.  Channel that stress or whatever is bothering you right into each set of lifting.  Let it fuel you.

 .

Jeremy:  What advice do you have for young powerlifters who are just starting?

Sherm Pensyl:  1) Stay away from drugs–performance and recreational!  You won’t be a regular in my gym if you do either.  I never have used and never needed to.  Learn proper bench press form.  Form is everything and is the first thing I teach a new lifter.  They don’t touch any real weight until they perfect their form.  You get stronger at a faster and safer rate if you know form.  2) Get a training partner or partners that have your back.  Lifts may be individual, but training is a group sport and having the support of others in the gym is huge!  You need that fellowship time.

.

Jeremy:  Were you ever tempted to use steroids?

Sherm Pensyl:  No!  I’ve never even seen a steroid.  I have nothing against lifters who use them.  I’ve just never needed them to be successful with my lifting.  It’s like a baseball player putting a cork in their bat.  I compete in a drug free federation, and I get tested often.  Being able to say you lifted an impressive amount of weight is cool.  Being able to say your did it without any steroids or performance enhancers is awesome!!  I’ve also heard certain steroids make your genitals shrink.  Why would anybody want to do that?

.

Jeremy:  What supplements do you use?

Sherm Pensyl:  I take creatine and protein.  I usually don’t take them in the summertime, as I don’t typically maintain my bench press at a high weight to give my body a break.  Once I start my serious training at the end of the summer, I start taking my supplements again.

.

Jeremy:  Can you share a memorable moment from your early days in Competitive Lifting?

Sherm Pensyl:  I was at a sanctioned meet, competing against a marine MMA instructor in the bench press.  He was shredded and was a badass on the platform.  We were friends, but we were still competitors on the platform.  I never made small talk with my competition until after the lifting was done.  I remember one time he had done his lift and I was next, as I was benching a higher weight.  For some reason I thought it was a good idea to jaw with him and when they called my name to the platform I yelled out, “I’m not taking a backseat to no MMA instructor!”  In hind sight, it was a risky thing to say.  The marine was cool with it afterwards.  I’m pretty sure his senior class voted him “most likely to kick someone’s ass.”  I’m just glad it wasn’t me that day.

.

Jeremy:  What role does mental preparation play in your performances?

Sherm Pensyl:  I’ve always believed that the mental part of competitive lifting is 75% of the game.  Proper form, timing, breathing, foot placement, hand placement, head placement, back arch, belt placement and tightness and visual focus are all things that you have to perfect when moving heavy weight on the bench press.  It’s a mental game.  If one of those things is off,  it could change the lift for the worse.  You really have to envision the weight going up before you ever touch it.  The mental game is crucial.  Also, Music.  I play music that fires me up.   It’s not always heavy metal songs that do it for me.  I’ve worn them out over the years.  I’ve been made fun of a time or two for moving heavy weight to “I Ran” by A Flock of Seagulls.  If it works, it works.  Don’t judge me!!

 .

Jeremy:  Can you share a funny story from your lifting experiences?

Sherm Pensyl:  I was recruited to be on a team of ten bench pressers from all over Western PA, and we were going to the Huntingdon State Penitentiary to compete against ten of their best bench pressers.  I was talking to two inmates who were helping with the meet.  They were asking all kinds of questions about creatine.  The one inmate said when he gets out the next year, the first thing he was going to do was buy some creatine and start taking that to supplement his lifting.  I looked at the other inmate and asked when he was getting out.  He said, “I’m not.”  At that moment in time, I had never felt more like I put my foot in my mouth.

.

Jeremy:  Describe the feeling of breaking a record.

Sherm Pensyl:  Breaking a record is awesome.  There are many federations.  When I have broken a record, it has been in just one federation at that time.  It’s not across the board.  Someone may break that record down the road, but nobody can ever take away the fact that I held that record at one time.  I still don’t think Lela Pensyl realizes the magnitude of what she has done with breaking three records  She was kind of over it the next day.  Me, on the other hand, I still love talking about breaking the national record at age 18 and that was 30+ years ago.

.

Jeremy:  How do you adapt your training to accommodate the physical changes that come with age?

Sherm Pensyl:  I really have had to change the way I lift.  I stretch a lot more.  I’ve had to change my bench press grip.  There are certain exercises I cannot do.  I go to the chiropractor every other Tuesday.  Its a standing Appointment at Live Well Chiropractic.  They keep my shoulders moving, and they have done therapy on my left elbow.  Going there regularly is an important part of my routine.  I have to keep the blood flowing properly.

.

Jeremy:  What impact has powerlifting had on your family dynamics?

Sherm Pensyl:  Lifting and competing with Lela Pensyl  has certainly brought us closer.  It comes down to being able to change hats from Dad to coach when the time is right.  We both enjoy lifting, so that is a huge part of our dynamic.  Having the Haus of Fury in the backyard allows us to hit a workout and then head back into the house and watch America’s Got Talent together on DVR.

.

Jeremy:  What message do you hope your story sends to other athletes and families who are pursuing their passions together?

Sherm Pensyl:  If you have a common interest with your kid, pursue it.  One of the greatest things that ever happened to me was having my daughter pursue my passion and make it her own.  I have also preached natural, drug free lifting and will continue to do so.  If steroids or performance enhancers are your thing, good for you.  I have no beef with that, I just don’t promote.  If you get into competitive lifting with your kid, enjoy it.  Make it fun.  I sure have, and I look forward to m any more years of it.
