Introduction to DIY Cornhole boards:

Corn hole is popular game that has taken over the backyards, parking lots and auditoriums.  I enjoy playing outside in the summer.  I am in an indoor league in the Winter.  While there is a temptation to make something as simple as 2 ramps to try to save money, it is actually a bad idea.  I will tell you how to make your own cornhole boards (DIY cornhole boards) and why you shouldn’t.

Cornhole can be played on any quality surface.  But to me, the boards are actually the most important part of the game.  Poor boards bounce.  They move.  Bad boards don’t let your cornhole bags slide.  It is very hard  to play, score and have fun under these board conditions.

Professional- grade boards are the way to go for a great experience.  You want boards that are sturdy, slick, heavy, level, square and durable.  Otherwise, you can’t get consistant practice and have fair, fun games.  To make DIY cornhole boards, you will require proper tools.  You need to use birch wood and plywood.  And, you need to have some knowledge and skill.  Even with plans, equipment and skill, you are looking at a 10+ hours over several days to complete this project.

If your reasoning for wanting to know how to make your own cornhole boards is to challenge yourself, make something with your own hands as a gift or you’re a professional woodworker or artist, go for it.  If you think you are saving money, keep reading!  lol.

Cornhole history is somewhat unclear.  Cornhole is also known as bean bag toss game.  While other games and sports have well documented pasts, Cornhole does not.  It is a game that most likely originated in the midwest, specifically OHIO.  Cornhole started as a game played on farms during the downtime.  Farmers made some type of board with a hole and filled bags with whole kernel corn.  And like today, players tossed the bags at the platforms trying to land on the platform or in the hole.  Read More…
