Chocolate Protein Powder: Why Protein?

Resistance Training causes your muscles to strain.  The stress causes muscle fibers to get tiny tears.  Your body responds by repairing and rebuilding the damaged fibers through muscle protein synthesis.  One of the best ways to satisfy your body’s need for protein during muscle protein synthesis is a chocolate protein shake.

Protein is necessary for muscle protein synthesis.  The building blocks for muscle growth and repair comes from protein.  These building blocks are call amino acids.  On a training day, you are actively breaking down muscle tissue.  Amino acids are used to repair and rebuild the muscle tissue. Therefore, you need a constant supply of protein.  based on how strenuous your exercise, you can be doing muscle protein synthesis up to 48 hours after your workout.

It is important to provide  your muscles with enough protein.  The best way to do that is by consuming a high-protein diet throughout the day.  Sources of protein are lean meats, eggs, fish, diary, beans, nuts, and protein supplements.

Each individual’s target amount of protein can very depending on muscle mass and exertion, but the American College of Sports Medicine suggests you consume 1.2-1.7 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day.

Muscle Protein Synthesis

Your body can be in muscle protein synthesis for up to 48 hours after exercise.  There are several factors that determine the amount of protein you need.  Workout intensity determines the time your body needs to repair itself.  Additional factors would include your body composition and your overall diet.

The objective resistance training is to put your body into muscle protein synthesis mode.  When your workout is intense or involves resistance training, you are looking at 24-48 hours.  During this time frame, you need a steady supply of  protein.  An easy way to get your body that protein is with a chocolate protein shake.

What About Diet

To get muscle protein synthesis jumpstarted, experts recommend consuming protein rich foods or supplements 30 minutes to an hour after a workout.  Of course, the body’s need for protein doesn’t end there.  It is important to eat adequate amounts of protein the rest of the day.  IMO, a chocolate protein shake is the easiest way to consistantly get that post workout protein.

It is important to  keep your body supplied with enough protein for muscle repair and growth.  To do so, it is recommended that you consume protein rich foods or supplements every 3-4 hours throughout the day.  Emphasize the post-workout meal.  Keep in mind, the target amount of protein per meal is 20-30 grams to properly support muscle growth.

Protein Utilization

The body can absorb and use 20-30 grams of whey protein per serving.  There is no benefit to consuming more than 20-30 grams in a single serving.  The actual amount can very based several factors like body weight, muscle mass and diet.  Not all proteins are equal.  The absorption rate of animal based proteins such as meat, eggs and dairy tends to be higher than plant based sources like nuts and legumes.  The absorption rate of whey protein is high.

Phase 1–Quick Absorbtion

Whey protein isolate and whey protein hydrolysate are absorbed by the body in the first phase. These proteins can begin to fuel your body and deliver muscle repairing amino acids faster than normal whey concentrates.

Phase 2–Muscle Fuel

Whey protein concentrate and milk protein concentrate— along with a blend of digestive enzymes— are absorbed in the second phase to help shuttle amino acids to your muscles and help build, repair, and recover without the bloat or digestive issues.

Phase 3–Suppress Appetite

Lastly, micellar casein and calcium caseinate are absorbed in the third and final phase— which allows your body to receive a steady stream of muscle fueling amino acids, as well as help curb hunger and suppress appetite.

Whey Protein Isolate

Whey Protein Isolate is the whey protein minus the excess sugars, lactose and fats–leaving the raw unadulterated protein that’s loaded with muscle building amino acids.

Whey Protein Concentrate

The original champion of protein formulas.  Whey Protein Concentrate was added to the formula because of its easy bioavailability.  This means the protein gets to your muscles faster.

Micellar Casein

Known as the “Slow Protein” Micellar Casein is absorbed by the body at a slower rate than whey proteins.  It is the ideal protein to support hunger cravings and muscle recovery.

Milk Protein Concentrate

Milk Protein Concentrate improves absorption and delivery of proteins to muscles.

Calcium Caseinate

Derived from milk casein, Calcium Caseinate is a “Slow Protein” that takes longer to digest, which allows for a steady stream of amino acids.

Whey Protein Hydrolysate

Whey Protein Hydrolysate is similar to whey protein, however, WPH has been shown to be absorbed faster than normal whey.  One study revealed that whey protein hydrolysate had a greater post exercise benefit than normal whey protein concentrate.
