BEDFORD BANDITS...YEAR 2 (2018)

The year is 2018.  We’ve been consistently beating Cumberland each month.  That was our barometer for success.  I’m the Bedford Bandits Player/Coach, Matt Price.  “I’m telling them tonight.  It’s time.  I said ‘no’ last year.  But they’ve put in the work, and we are ready to see the next level,” I told asst coach Justin Smith.  “We need to go to Nationals.  I know we can compete.  But, we’ll never be the best until we beat the best!”  “What teams do you want to send?” asked Justin Smith.  “All of them!” I answered.

“Alright guys, Listen up.  Last year a few of you went to Nationals with Cumberland.  But, we (Bedford Bandits) have been training twice a week for 2 years now.   You’ve sacrificed your Friday and Saturday nights all year.  We’ve done drill after drill.  We’ve scrimmaged every practice.  On top of the practice’s we’ve played the Cumberland Raiders every month.  It’s time to face the best of the other 23 clubs in the country.  I believe that if we play our best, all our teams can compete at Nationals.  It’s time to show everyone what we’ve been up to here in little Bedford, PA.”

I knew that going to Nationals was a big challenge.  The Bedford Bandits Club entered 6 teams.  We competed in the 8u, 10u, 12u, 15u, Bronze and World Class divisions.  On top of training and prepping for the games, a trip to Lincoln, Nebraska needs to be planned out and paid for 50 players and families.  It is a logistical challenge.  I’ve been going to Nationals most of my life, but now we are taking an entire club.  We had no choice, but to figure this thing out.

Next hurdle was more practice.  We were very fortunate that our rink owners gave us additional practice time.  I had a list of weaknesses for each team, and we really focused on those the last 12 weeks before we left.  We couldn’t have done it without the extra time.

Bedford Bandits Go To Lincoln, Nebraska

After months of planning and fund raising and practicing, the Bedford Bandits were packing up and heading to Nationals.  This is a first for almost everyone.  The Bandits were trekking across the country, and most of the players had no idea what to expect.  In fact, some of the players couldn’t even skate 2 years ago!  None of us had been to Nebraska.  However; I have played rink hockey my whole life and have even participated on Team USA.   I’m well aware of what we are trying to do.  But, I also have no idea what is going to happen.

I gave them the usual advice that we preached in practice and at tournaments, “Whatever happens…don’t give up.  Play as a team.  Work through all the hard stuff.  There will be obstacles, unexpected and difficult, but if we face them as a team, we can get through it.”  Everyone was very excited.  The amount of teamwork that it took to grow from just 2 players 2 years ago to the largest club in the country proved that we had something special.  We arrived in Lincoln!

“Remember,” said Coach Matt, “Every year at Nationals there are tryouts for the USA World Team.  You’ll have to participate in drills similar to those we do in practice.  Then you’ll scrimmage.  There’ll be a panel that picks the team.  How you perform in the drills and scrimmage are important, but the panel also considers your attitude and how you conduct yourself in the games.  You are always representing yourself and Bedford Bandits.

The Games

In all my years, I never saw a team arrive at Nationals like we did…as a team.  Everyone is in their cars or rental cars.  We pulled into Nationals in a chartered bus.  We quickly sent the message that we don’t do things like everyone else.  I addressed the club as we pulled up to the drop off.

“Nebraska rinks are the same size as Moon Glo and Moon Glo II.” I explained.  “We have to relax and play our game.”

We had been game tested leading up to this point, but with 24 clubs spread out across the country, there isn’t a league.  Honestly, we are lucky that we have a club only 30 miles away.  We played against the Cumberland Raiders every month.  Still, I set very high goals for us.  Simply Win….but national champs?!  Honestly, we were hoping to make a good showing and win some games.

I knew our players very well.  I understood what Nationals and that pressure is like.  My job as coach was to make sure they were having fun.  They do their best when we have a balance of fun and work.  I also kept an eye on them off the rink.  I didn’t want any off-rink shenanigans  effecting our game.

As the tournaments got under way, we found our teams winning.  we believe success brings confidence and confidence brings more success.  All our teams kept winning and winning.  I was playing on our world class team, but honestly, the most fun I had was watching our kids have so much fun and success.   In one day the Bedford Bandits went from a wide-eyed group of newbies to a confident team of rink hockey veterans.  We were beating teams that I knew were historically at top.  We were out skating everyone!

Bedford Bandits Playing for Gold

We came to Lincoln, Nebraska with 6 teams; 8u, 10u,12u, 15u, Bronze and World Class.  All 6 teams made it to the finals.  We were playing for Gold across the board!  No matter what, we were leaving with a lot of hardware!  It was a tremendous accomplishment.  We took the Gold in 8u and World Class.  We got Silver in 10u, 12u, 15u, and Bronze.  This was Bedford Bandits first ever trip to Nationals.  This was our 3rd year (2nd full year) as a club.  We never could have imagined of having so much success so fast!  What started off as a dream in 2016 had become a reality.  I was so amazed and speechless.  Every time I turned around another one of our teams had a medal ceremony.  It was unbelievable.

This was absolutely my favorite trip to Nationals.  Going as a coach for the first time was so gratifying.  But, we weren’t done yet!  There was a cherry on the top….The Bedford Fire Department gave us an escort the last 3 miles of our trip back to our rink.  Friends, family, fans, the newspaper all came for our arrival.  It was very special and is my favorite memory of the trip!

I was most proud of how well all the other teams spoke of our comradery, manners and respectfulness.  It was yet another example of how great all the athletes in our club listened to their coach, even from the beginning.  Having coachable players, makes my life so much easier.

Bedford Bandits--The Club

We are the Bedford Bandits Roller Hockey Team!!  Our home town rink is right in the center of Bedford County, Pennsylvania, at the Moon Glo II.  The rink is owned by the Ferguson family.  They are also very involved in Rink Hockey.  Our head coach is Matt Price.

We formed our club in 2016.  Our club is comprised of over 50 athletes.  This includes Both Youth and Adults and Boys and Girls.  Coach Matt Price has a long history of playing rink hockey and has been very successful.  He started skating and playing rink hockey at the same time he started walking!  lol.  Coach Matt Price is a player coach.  He still participates as an athlete in the World Class Division.  Our assistant coach is Justin Smith.  Justin played street hockey as a kid and has been roller skating since he was 6 years old.  Justin also competes still.  He is an athlete in the Silver and/or Bronze Divisions.

The Bedford Bandits have youth that participate in the 9U Division, 12U Division, 15U Division and 18U Division.  Our Adults participate in the Bronze Division, Silver Division and World Class Division.

How Bedford Bandits Started...

Bedford Bandits formed in 2016, Darren Smith and Kian Davis saw some newspaper clippings about Matt Price hanging on the Moon Glo II roller rink bulletin board.  Darren and Kian were students of Teresa Price’s roller dancing, figures and freestyle class.  They started talking to Matt Price about rink hockey, and asked if they could try it.  Matt told them that if they could get a few kids together, he would coach them.  Coach Matt  Price helped with the cause and called on some of his buddies to help with practices.  Some of their kids even joined the club, Bedford Bandits.

The Bedford Bandits don’t always follow the mold…Sometimes they break the mold.  Matt Price grew up spending time with = his mother, Teresa, at her roller dance, figures and freestyle classes.  She taught all different ages and levels and Matt practiced with them all.  Matt knew the importance of skating ability from his own career.

An Unorthodox Demand

When the club first started the athletes were required to take Teresa’s skating class.  Some of the kids couldn’t skate at all.  By the time they went to nationals in 2018, the bandits were a top skating club.  As a result, Coach Matt Price will still bring his mother to practices if he has a team that he thinks needs work on skating.  Other clubs from around the country have actually come to practices to watch how Bedford Bandits will work on jumps, spins and dance to improve their hockey game.

“We are the only club that does this.  We work on skating by practicing dance.” –Coach Matt Price

Coach Matt Price had played roller hockey his entire life and he lived in Bedford, Pa.  But, he had to travel to the Moon Glo rink in Cumberland, MD and play for the Raiders.  With Coach Matt Price’s experience including nationals and international play on Team USA, he knew exactly what it would take to get a team to the National level of competition here in the little town of Bedford, PA.

The club quickly grew from 2 players to over 50 in just 2 years.  Roller Hockey is not a school sport, so players came from all over the county and from several school districts.  Coach Matt Price held weekly practices consisting of skills drills and scrimmages.  The Bandits approach to developing players is to keep it simple.  The kids learn the technical aspects of the game as they are ready over the years.

Coach Matt Price has tapped into his extensive network to bring in special guests to work with the youth and scrimmage with the adults.  Coach Matt’s passion for the team and rink hockey is evident with everything he does.  He has created a positive environment and the club has thrived.

It has without a doubt helped that the Bandits have had so much success.  When other kids see that they have friends in the newspaper for playing at nationals, they want to come learn about it.

The future plans for the Bedford Bandits…as always, it’s all about the kids.  Coaches will involve the older kids more with coaching the younger players at practices.  This promotes the older players to set a good example for the younger players.

The club has become a breeding ground for Team USA.  In 2024 the Games are held in Italy.  There are 4 players representing USA on the Men’s U19 team.  They are Darren Smith (Age 17), Austin Gorsuch, Liam Murphy, Bylar Aikey.  There is one player on the Women’s World Class team.  She is Alexa Smith (Age 14).  And, there is one player on the Men’s World Class Team.  That is Matt Price.  There is also a long list of Bandit youth players ready to play for Team USA World Class U19 in the next couple years.

Bedford Bandits--International Play

Roller Hockey/Rink Hockey/Quad Hockey (see Wikipedia definition) is an international sport.  Rink Hockey internationally is more comparable to football or ice hockey here in the United States.  It is very popular and serious.  International players are often paid.  They have usually been playing since they were able to walk and practice everyday–since they don’t have jobs.  In some countries rink hockey is even a part of their educational curriculum.  So, international play is a very advanced level of play.  This poses a great challenge as every year the US sends an ameteur team to compete with International Pros.

International tournaments have less categories.  There are 2 Teams for both men and women.  The teams are 19u and Adult.  The Bandits currently have 4 players on the men’s 19u team,  1 player on the women’s 19u team and 1 player on the men’s adult team.

The Bedford Bandits are very active with some of the other clubs to grow the sport in the United States.  We are actively recruiting clubs in the midwest.  In order for the US to compete in International play, we need to have players putting in similar hours of training and preparation.  If we can grow the popularity, we are hoping to have a paid Team USA.  It is not an even playing field currently and USA cannot compete at the World level.  Our players are spread out over the country and the cost for travel to practices and the games is self-funded ($4,000+).

USA World Team Try-Outs

Every Year at US National Tournament there are try-outs for the USA World Team.  Try-outs consist of competing in drills and scrimmages.  A selection panel then narrows down the field until they have their team.  While skills are important, attitude and character are also very important to the panel.

Men’s U19 USA team in the 2022 World Skate Games in Argentina included 4 participants from the Bedford Bandits, Liam Murphy, Darren Smith, Austin Gorsuch and Byler Aikey.  The Men’s World Class USA Team had Matt Price from the Bedford Bandits.  They will all also be participating in 2024 in Italy.  In 2024, Alexa Smith will be joining the USA World Class Ladies Team as a 14 year old.  She will also be competing in Italy.  For more information on National Events and Team USA check out rinkhockeyusa.com.

Roller Hockey USA

There are 24 clubs in the United States.  Many clubs are in large metropolitan areas like Miami, FL or Lubbock, TX.  Bedford, PA is a small town of only 10,000 people.  Our Neighboring Club is in Cumberland, MD.  The Cumberland Raiders are our sister team and they play in the rink, Moon Glo.  Amazingly, the Bedford Bandits Club in Bedford, PA is the largest club in the country and one of the newest.  Under Coach Matt’s leadership the Bedford Bandits offer an opportunity to be a National Champion.  Those who work hard enough can even travel to different countries and meet new people while playing the sport that they love on Team USA.  These opportunities and the team’s successes have attracted talented athletes to the club of all ages.

Bedford Bandits Family

We have often referred to our team as a family.  When traveling or working together, everyone always has each other’s backs.  The kids love to hang out.  And, it nice that its kids from all over the county and different school districts building friendships.  Athletes are encouraged to spend time together off the floor.  We feel that you gain respect for each other when there is a friendship present.

We always work together.  Together being the key word.  We all report to games an hour early and warm up together.  We encourage our athletes to show up mentally prepared and well rested with a good attitude to give 100%.  Teamwork is of utmost importance for our success.  Our team dynamic is built around teamwork.  We stress it during practice and with everything that we do.

The youth and adults have also built friendships with the Cumberland Raiders team.  This allows for a broader dynamic and camaraderie.  In addition to making friends locally, the youth and even adults have the opportunity to make friends Nationally and Internationally.  Its a great way for the kids to use the foreign languages they take in school and for international kids to use their English.  Hockey parents even make friends locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

"Magic" Matt Price

Indoor Hockey, Rink Hockey, Roller Hockey, American Indoor Hockey

Matt Price has been playing rink hockey pretty much since he was born in 1981.  He continues to play today and coach the Bedford Bandits Club.  Matt is often referred to as the best player in the United States.  His friends call him Magic Matt because of his shots, skills and ability.  He is one of the few players in the states that grew up at the skating rink (like the international players do).

Matt’s mother, Teresa Price, is a skating instructor and manager at the Moon Glo II skating rink.  As a kid, Matt was always at her side.  While Matt never competed in dance, like his sister, he learned that style of skating.  Matt could do the all jumps from a young age.  And, he was at the public skates and hockey practices with his mom.  I personally remember skating and this little kid would be zooming between everyone and through our legs.  He could do it forwards, backwards, on one foot….it was Matt.

Matt Price competed with the Cumberland Raiders.  While still in high school at the young age of 17, he started playing on Team USA World Class Men’s division.  He was one of the youngest ever to do so.

Matt is a very unselfish person.  When I asked him how many national championships, MVP titles, coaching titles he has won.  He didn’t know.  That doesn’t motivate him.  He loves the sport.  He loves to play and coach the sport.  Hockey is in his blood.  But, he doesn’t do it for his own glory.  He is always giving….knowledge, time, energy, talents.

Matt Price was able to give me the details of his club’s success since he became a coach/player.   Those plaques were on the wall at the rink, and of course he was there when I was interviewing him.  lol.

Bedford Bandits Club Results at Nationals

What was really cool was that during those 5 years every team but one is represented on that list.  There was one team that came in 4th once.  lol..Just missed it.  It is quite an accomplishment for a coach of such a young club to be so successful.

As a player Matt has competed in 15 World Games on the Men’s World Class Team.  He just made the world team again this year and will compete in 2024 in Italy.

Construction on the rink begin in 1947.  They had to pause because of WWII.  The rink was finished in 1948.  The floor size is 164′ X 65′.  It is made of maple with a special plastic that is rolled on.  When the current owners, the Fergusons, bought the rink in late 1981, roller hockey started in this area.  The Price family have all played rink hockey over the years.  It is a family tradition for them.  They competed with Cumberland until 2018.

The Moon Glo II has hosted the Regional roller hockey tournament over the years and still is in the rotation.  The 1988 National tournament was held in Bedford, Pa.
