What is Grounding?

Grounding aka Earthing is the physical connection of the Human Body with Mother Earth.  When grounded Negative ions from Earth are attracted to Positive ions of the body.  The ions clump together and balance the positive charge resulting in a change in PH and better health.

Grounding Historically

Humans have become less and less grounded over the years.  As a species we are on a quest for comfort.  Science eventually figures out that comfort and convenience moves us further from health.  Then trends begin to recreate the discomfort.  Grounding, weight lifting, Ice Baths, Fasting, hydroponic gardens, etc. are examples.  We’ve learned that our bodies react in ways that make us better and stronger from contact with Mother Earth, resistance training, exposure to cold/hot, prolonged periods of no calories, eating organic food.  We are designed for the discomfort of life.  God designed our bodies to exist in harmony with our environment.  

Why are there so few diseases in animals in the wild, but our pets suffer all the same ailments as humans?  Obesity, anxiety, cancer, seizures, etc.  are common in household pets.

We will look at the different grounding techniques that can be used to achieve these grounding benefits:

What does Grounding Actually do to Our Bodies?

Here are 5 physiological changes that are actually happening when we are in contact with Earth or a similar Electromagnetic Field.  

1.  Inflammation is reduced.  Our internal organs return to proper function while grounded.

2.  Neutralizes Free Radicals in the blood.  The Earth’s negative ions are basically an antioxidant provided in endless supply for free!

3.  Brain Waves shift to the Alpha state.  The Alpha state is that of relaxed/healing.  Cortisol levels decrease which means we are less stressed.  Our brain waves shift to Alpha during meditation and exercise.  Grounding gives the same effect.

4.  Protection from Electromagnetic Fields.  Our bodies can carry a charge from exposure to WIFI, 4G, 5G, Cell Phones, etc.  When we are grounded we instantly release that charge out of our bodies.  Think of a telephone pole that is grounded.  If there is a lightning strike, the power surge is sent to the ground and not your TV.  

5.  Injury Healing.  Our blood becomes thinner from grounding.  Thinner blood can be pumped easier and is much more efficient with the exchange of nutrients and waste with our cells.  Think of red blood cells as little magnets.  When they carry different charges they are attracted to each other and clot.  While grounded, they are coated in negative ions and have the same charge and repel each other.  Unclotted blood is thinner blood.

Getting outside and getting grounded is great for several reasons.  First, it costs nothing.  Second, it is always a great idea to stay connected to nature.  Studies have shown the massive amounts of benefits of being in nature.

It isn’t always convenient to ground directly with Mother Earth.  Climate, schedule, allergies, etc can be an issue.  So, there are products to help make grounding simple and easy at your home or office.  You can plug directly into the ground port on an electrical outlet.  I personally use a grounding mat at my desk and either have my feet on it or my hands are on it at my keyboard.  I also use a grounding pillow case.  I spent under $100 total on both.  

To be grounded, you only need 1 cell of your body to be in contact with a grounding source.  So, a foot, a hand, your back, an ear, etc is all that is required.  I say that because the various grounding techniques and products come in any range of sizes.  You can choose from Earth all the way down to a small grounding mat.  lol. 

I have experienced improved sleep and a reducing in blood pressure since using the grounding mat and grounding pillow case.

Grounding mat

A Grounding Mat is very versatile.  It is made of a conductive material that is durable and very easy to clean.  My mat is 12″ X 36″.  That size can be place on the floor for my feet under my desk.  I can used it on my desk under my keyboard for my wrists to touch.  It can be placed on my bed and I can sleep on it.  They are available in many sizes.  You can get them the size of a yoga mat or the size of a king size bed.  The cord is very long so the grounding mat is easily placed where I want to use it.  Grounding mats are $30 and up.

Grounding Sheets

Grounding sheets are a very simple way to get grounded all night while your sleep.  Cotton sheets have thin a thin lining of silver thread.  The thread is conductive.  It is nice because you can roll off of a small grounding mat.  Grounding sheets give you access to the entire bed.  They are also easily cleaned.  Most are machine washable.  You just have to avoid chemicals like fabric softener that can coat the silver and reduce its functionality.  Grounding sheets are $65 and up depending on your bed size.

Grounding Blanket

A Grounding blanket is a comfy version of the sheets.  I got one for my teenage daughter.  She likes blankets.  It is another good way to be efficient.  Ground while you sleep.  They can come in multiple sizes.  They are a little pricier than the sheets.

A Grounding pillow case.  This is what I use.  My family also has these.  It is very inexpensive ($30) and allows me to keep my grounding mat at my desk.  It is essentially the same material as the sheets.  They are made of cotton with silver threads and cover your pillow.

PEMF Mat

Ways to test if you're grounding...

Grounding tester

This is my favorite method.  It is very simple.  You do not need to know how to operate a complicated device.  You don’t need any understanding of electricity or wiring.  It is very safe.  You simply plug this tester into a ground receptacle just like the mat or sheets or whatever you are testing and push a button and touch the tester to the item.  A green light means it is functioning properly.

Receptacle Tester

If your grounding equipment is not functioning properly, you can test the outlet with a receptacle tester.  You simply plug this into the outlet.  The pattern of lights will let you know if the receptacle is wired correctly.  Some older homes have updated, 3 prong, outlets, but the actual wiring in the wall from the breaker box wasn’t done.

Electrical tester

I do not recommend this method.  This method will give you exact readings.  You’ll see that you are around 2 volts and once grounded you go to 0 volts.  However; you have to know how to operate this equipment.  If you do it wrong, there is a chance for injury.  

It is a little strange to plug something in and it does nothing.  If you want to know if a blender is working, you plug it in and turn it on.  grounding equipment only uses the ground and is not powered.  But, the grounding tester gives you the “yes” or “no” peace of mind to know if it working.  To get the actual technical readings, the risk is not worth the reward.

How About some Research on Grounding?

There have been a lot of studies done.  It isn’t hard to do some basic studies yourself.  Here are the opinions of some reputable sources.  The first is Eastern Kentucky University.  For this literature review, EKU located 14 empirical studies that used sound scientific methods for assessing the effect of Grounding/Earthing.  These studies showed earthing improves perceptions of pain, stress, relaxation, sleep quality, mood and general health.  In addition, these studies also reported a wide variety of physiological improvements, including blood chemistry, hormone levels, nervous system activity and immune functioning.   The majority of effect size for all of these variable are in the moderate range.

 The second is a paper from ScienceDirect.com.  It is also review article of research evidence and clinical observations.  Final conclusion:  Core components of alternative, lifestyle and preventative medicine presently include nutrition, exercise, stress management and relationships.  The practice of Earthing should be added to the formula.
