Hi.  I’m Silas Weber.  Here I am winning 1st place in a blind draw tournament.  I’m the only kid playing.  This is what Cornhole (bean bag toss) has become.  The Cornhole history is interesting.  Let me explain the history of cornhole.

Cornhole history Lesson

Cornhole history is somewhat unclear.  Cornhole is also known as bean bag toss game.  While other games and sports have well documented pasts, Cornhole does not.  It is a game that most likely originated in the midwest, specifically OHIO.  Cornhole started as a game played on farms during the downtime.  Farmers made some type of board with a hole and filled bags with whole kernel corn.  And like today, players tossed the bags at the platforms trying to land on the platform or in the hole.

The corn hole game, over time, became popular.  The game spread throughout the midwest.  Now, you would find Bean bag toss game at fairs, picnics, churches, back yards, farms and other social events.  The game began to evolve and spread nationally.  In the 1990’s Cornhole got national recognition.

American Cornhole Organization began in 1999.  ACO was founded to promote the game and standardize the rules.  The ACO did just that.  There is now a standard set of rules and regulations.  They also created a ranking system for players.

Since, the game of Cornhole has continued to grow in popularity.  There are thousands of tournaments held annually accross the country.  Cornhole game has even grown into a legitimate sport.  There are professional corn hole players.  Players compete for cash prizes and the top players even have sponsorships.

Most towns have organizations ranging from Non-Profits to Breweries hosting cornhole tournaments.  These tournaments draw in customers, are good marketing and fund raise.  Cornhole may have started as a humble game to pass the time for farmers.  It has come a long way.  It is the beloved backyard game played nationally.   Cornhole provides hours of fun and entertainment at BBQ’s, tailgates, tournaments, etc.

Cornhole is now expanding beyond the US borders.  There are players and tournaments popping up globally.  The game may continue to evolve and change.  But, for those of us that love the game, there is a special place in our hearts for the old bean bag toss game from Ohio.
